5031nv Router has multiple MAC address?

5031nv router, AT&T uverse, home use.  Our router has a MAC printed directly on the box, last digit of 8.  The status page shows the MAC address of router is the same as on box.  However, our devices (both wan and lan) connect to the default gateway that has a similar MAC but last digit of 9.  I have heard that some routers use a different MAC for wan and lan, but it appears both our wan and lan use the -9 MAC.  I tried manually connecting to the -8 MAC and couldn't access the internet.  Is this normal?

Hi @lucideniale,

We are not too sure on the reason for the difference, but from what we looked into, the differing MAC addresses are due to a LAN and WAN as  you stated. We are not sure how you determined the WAN IP address, but, that is usually the one that is printed and in the system information.

Thank you for your answer.  Do you mind clarifying a few points?

1)  The mac address is the router's physical address, it's built into the device.  According to your answer, the 5031nv has more than one mac address.  How many mac addresses does this particular model have?

2)  All of our wan and lan use the same mac address, but it doesn't match the one on the box.  This was confirmed with netsh, they are all windows machines.  So the case of wan having one mac and lan having one mac doesn't apply to us.  Is it normal that our wan and lan share the same router, the router mac is the same for all wan and lan, but this mac doesn't match the physical mac on the box (nor on the status page)?

Thanks for your help.
