2ghz vs 5ghz

I recently bought some smart plugs for my home and found out that they only support 2.4ghz and my internet is set up at 5ghz. I live alone and play a MMORPG in the evenings and wonder if I switch to 2.4ghz will it affect my game play? Also, how do I change it from 5ghz to 2.4ghz?

Hi Julie478, we can help you with switching to the 2.4GHz radio band for your smart plugs!

To select the 2.4 GHz radio band for your smart plugs, you'll have to disable band steering. When your Wi-Fi gateway has band steering, it automatically guides your wireless devices to the best radio band. You can learn more about band steering by reading our article on Enhanced Wi-Fi networking.

To disable band steering, just enter the gateway configuration by opening a web browser and entering http://192.168.1.254. From there you can change the names of your wireless networks for each band. This will let you select the 2.4 GHz band for the smart plugs.

When it comes to gaming, the 5 GHz band is usually recommended, however the 2.4 GHz band can run games smoothly, since not much bandwidth is required, and it has a longer range. We have more information about 2.4 GHz vs 5 GHz here in the forums.

If you have any other questions or concerns about your Wi-Fi network, just let us know!

@Julie478  use the Guest Network, which is always 2.4GHz. The AT&T gateway, and most gateways, are dual band. That is, they support both 2.4GHz and 5GHz. However, AT&T gateways are notorious for poor band steering. Which means that they should be able to detect the band that a device needs to use and steer the device to the correct one. So, you can either point your 2.4GHz devices to the Guest Network or assign a separate SSID and password to the Guest Network and point your 2.4GHz devices to that and leave whatever SSID and password you have assigned to the gateway as is.
