1G Fiber newly installed. A question about speed...?

I recently had 1G fiber installed, internet only. There are numerous internet speed test sites but the one I'm curious about is one that's included in AT&T's internet user configuration settings software. Under the 'Diagnostic' tab, there's a 'Speed Test' button. I've noticed the speed tests I run are in the high 900Gbps range. Nothing to whine about there for sure. Makes me wonder though; in AT&T’s description, it says it's measuring the speed from the client's gateway, in my case the BGW210-700, to "AT&T's Network". If that means it's connected to some remote server, great! I'm wondering though if that's not simply a measure of speed to the client’s optical network terminal or other local device. In my case it's less than 4’ to the ONT (where the fiber connection begins) vs. who knows how many miles to a test server. If it's the latter that’s actually being tested and not simply a measure of local network speed… super good.

at&t speed test directs you to a dedicated server on at&t network from what i was told in the training courses

We're happy to address your question, @Daluke!

Constructive is exactly right. The information from the AT&T speed test is pulled directly from an AT&T server. So you can be sure that the results are exclusively for your Internet. We hope this information is helpful to you! If you have any other questions, just let us know.

The speed test performed through the app or via the At&t website will always reflect your speed at the gateway after your ONT. I believe for speed test functionality there are a number of dedicated servers solely for speed tests, however they can be tens to hundreds of miles away. Also when you perform a speed test on a device, you were doing so past the gateway and through your personal equipment, which may not be able to run at the same speed as the gateway.

ideally speedtest should be performed to ATT server less than 100 miles away... for the Milwaukee Wisconsin market, I test to ATT Cicero Il. server that I believe to be about 90 miles.

However testing to a Comcast server in the Chicago area is normally within 90% of Cicero in network testing.

Of course want to test with no other devices connected or in use, consuming bandwidth.

Hardwired to pc or laptop is better than wireless testing provided the equipment is capable of testing these speeds without adding complexity from firewalls, security software.
