Depending on the iPad model, some are single band and others may be dual-band. The iPad will use either band, if possible, to connect to the strongest signal. If your iPad is dual band, you may be able to assign a different SSID to the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands on your router and have the iPad connect to the appropriate one.
