Fast speedtest, super slow browsing
I switched to ATT Fiber a few months back, and I have been struggling with inconsistent browsing speeds since day one. My internet speedtests say I'm getting between 250 and 350 both up and down, yet browsing the internet is ridiculously slow. It takes pages 10 plus seconds to load at it's worst, and will time out altogether. I have done all the basic trouble shooting, power cycling the modem, switching bandwidth, ect. It happens on every device. It does not matter what bandwidth I am on. I am connected to Wi-fi, because what devices run wired anymore. This is not to mention the fact that the Wi-fi is useless if I'm even a room away. This problem happens when I am 8-10 feet away from the modem, so it isn't a range issue, plus the speedtests claim the speed is fine, but my browsing says otherwise. I have had so much trouble with ISP's, I don't even know what to do anymore.
This is the problem in a nutshell. My browser speed will slow WAY down. I will go to run a speedtest, both ATT and speedofme. The speedtest website will take forever to load, but once it does, the test says it's at 250-350mbps. So I think "I guess it's fine," and go back to browsing, only to have pages time out. What is the explanation for this? It happens on all sites, it's all devices, just to be clear. While I'm not an IT professional or anything, I'm not completely ignorant either, I know the troubleshooting basics.
The device I use most is a 2017 macbook pro, but like I said, the result is the same on tablets and phones, regardless of 2.4 or 5ghz bandwidth.
I'm tired of being told "everything is fine on our end." Something ain't right, I just need to know if it's a fixable problem, or if this is the way ATT fiber is. I know they won't let us buy our own modems, and the one's they give aren't the greatest, so I feel pretty stuck.
Any help would be appreciated.

I repent now after switching from Comcast to At&t fiber. They promote as if they have best speed in the world. Also speedtest shows the same, but when it comes to real world surfing, speed is disastrous. It was far better with blast speed of Comcast than At&t so called fiber. Now I am stuck with this stupid people as they bind you in 1year agreement.
WARNING: Do not go with At&t fiber....

And they will say, "everything is right on our end"- But their speed fluctuates. How can 5 devices have huge buffer if speed is 300mbps?
These people should be dragged in consumer court for cheating. No doubt, Comcast people told me that you would come back to us after sometime.

Could not agree more. I switched from Comcast because they refused to fix a noisy node, and my internet would drop all the time. This isn't as bad, but it's really annoying that the best we can hope for with these giant ISP is "not that bad." It's just so shifty that the speedtest webpage will take 30 seconds to load, and then will tell me that my speed is 350 mbps. Right. A tech will come out and say "Look, fast speedtest!" yet pages load like I'm using an AOL disc from 99'. Something doesn't add up.

Switch back to Comcast, in 14 days window or you will repent until agreement gets over as I do.
I learnt one thing from this issue - you should stick with famous companies for such services.
I am not in favor of Comcast nor Xfinity is paying me commission to promote them. I had Xfinity mobile for 6months and I switched back to At&t. For mobile network, Xfinity is not established yet. Similarly, for home internet if you are looking for speed- at&t has lot to work before they could come even parallel to Comcast.

Buy a $100-150 wireless router, connect it to the gateway and set it up as an access point. Turn off wifi in the gateway.
