This should not really have come as a surprise, I've been getting mailers, emails and txt's from AT&T for three years saying this was going to happen. It's been discussed here at length. Most news outlets also printed/broadcast the impending 3g shutdown.
If you had an active microcell, you should have gotten a new device to replace it for free. Unfortunately the free offer is long gone. The new device AT&T calls a booster, but it's not really a booster, it's a femtocell just like the old microcell, except it broadcasts a 4g/LTE signal instead of a 3g signal. They will have it back in stock soon and you can buy it here.
Your other option and a better and preferred one by most, is turn on WiFi-Calling on your phone, most phones are wifi-calling capable and you simply go into your phone settings and turn it on. It basically functions the same as the new booster (or old microcell) and sends your calls & sms/mms over your internet connection.

@perry514 I was about to respond to you but I see @73blazer beat me to it. He is correct so there is nothing more to add. If you are curious about the Cell Booster, read my Tech Guide, the link is in my sig line.
