Why is a message sometimes sent as a text instead of an imessage

Although I don't believe it is relevant, I have an iPhone 14 Max

I have a contact who also has an iPhone and is logged as such in my contact list.

When I try to send an iMessage, it sometimes goes as an iMessage and sometimes goes as a text message.  Why is that?  As a text message, I don't know when the text is viewed, but the iMessage tells me when it is viewed.

Probably an issue with either the recipient's phone or service. In that case your phone will just use the "normal" text message service.

If either you or the recipient is not connected to your respective iCloud accounts, it will send as a text because you have “send as sms” enabled. If you turn that off, it should send as an iMessage regardless.
