Using my phone internationally with a SIM card from another country

I’m traveling to Japan and I’m planning to purchase a SIM card there for temporary use while visiting. I have a phone plan with AT&T but haven’t paid the phone off yet. Will I need to pay the phone off before I swap out the SIM card?

You’ll need to pay off the phone to get it unlocked, and then you’ll need to get the phone unlocked before a non-AT&T SIM will work.

Recommend you add International Day Pass just in case you need it. Also insure WiFi calling is setup prior to departing.

Between IMessage and FaceTime calling using data from foreign data SIM with my iPhone can keep in touch with family that iPhones back home. Don’t know if Android phones have the same capabilities.
