Unlock iphone XR

Hi, I wanna buy and iphone XR (to use it in another country) on the apple store in USA but the only option is buy it with a carrier. I was wondering if I could buy it with AT&T carrier and unlock it with the device unlock portal. Would that be possible? Would I lose the guarantee on Apple store? Thanks for the help!
