switching from prepaid 3G phone (ATT) to new iphone SE postpaid - how to do this and keep the same phone number?

I have a prepaid gophone - an old 3G flip phone.

Just got a new iPhone SE.

Expect I need a new SIM card as the old one is unlikely to fit.  Want to keep my old phone number and switch to a higher data postpaid ATT plan.

Do I have to go into a store (want to avoid that right now)?  Can I order a SIM card and activate remotely and still keep my phone number - it's linked to everything and I've used the number for years and don't want to change it.

Yes, you need a replacement SIM card. The easiest way to do that is to go to an ATT corporate store. Unfortunately, ATT makes it near impossible to order a replacement online. You could order a SIM card from some other source like Amazon or eBay. You would need to call to get the SIM card activated with your number. If you go to a store, they will activate it with your number.

Should add that the iPhone was purchased from Apple unlocked.
