purchasing iphone at walmart and questions about process

I am looking to purchase an iphone 6 from Walmart but have never purchased a phone from a third party retailer.  I know that there are issues with early termination fees with the third party, but I have no intention of terminating the contract since we've been with AT&T for more than two years and I currently have an iphone that I want to upgrade.   Are there any other downsides to this?   Also, can I purchase the iphone and then activate the phone later?  I would need to transfer the files at a later time and would like to do this at home.  Is it easy to transfer all that data?  I am wanting to upgrade my husband and my phone and we are both part of the contract.  Do we both need to be present or can I buy both phones and change the contract there (and activate the phone later)?

Sorry for all the questions. This is all new to me since the last time I bought a phone it was at the Apple store and they did everything for us.

Hello @lb4uc123

You should not have any issues with purchasing your phones at Walmart, as far as renewing your contract and provisioning the phone on your account goes, but I don't know if they can delay activation (like AT&T stores can). You might need to check with them.

You shouldn't need your husband there as long as your name is listed on the account as either a primary account holder or an authorized user. Again, if they can't delay activation, it'll deactivate his phone and activate the new one, so it's best to check on that first.

You can transfer your content later, but if you have to, you can transfer some things, like your contacts and email settings, using Apple's iCloud service. If it's currently enabled on your phone, all you'll need to do is sign in with your Apple ID on the new phone and your information will transfer wirelessly, you can later restore the phone from your computer.

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

Thank you,

Dmitriy
