Poor signal!

Only getting one signal bar on my new iPhone 14 Pro Max.  I've tried everything to fix it, to no avail.  Sometimes I lose the signal entirely and it reverts to SOS mode only.  My two-factor authentication codes take way to long to arrive, and sometimes I have to turn the phone off and back on before receiving the codes.  I'm on an unlimited plan with 5G, but the signal is worse than it was with my old iPhone 8!!

Have you tried to use LTE only? If that works without issues then you're just in an area that has weak to non-existent 5G. If you still have issues then try Reset Network Settings. Keep login info close by in case you lose them.

I don’t know how to revert to LTE.  I tried the Reset Network Settings and that didn’t fix it.  I’m wondering if the Geothermal storm event this week is affecting cell service.  I just got the new phone a few days ago, right around that time.

Thank you for your reply!

@CJF_1  Settings -> Cellular -> Cellular Data Options -> Voice & Data -> 5G Auto, 5G On, LTE

Make sure your phone is setup properly for AT&T. You might want to call Apple and ask them to go over the settings with you.

We had no issues with our iPhones with the solar flare over the last few days.

Hey @CJF_1, we're here to help you. Thank you for the above information.
Let's get the information you need.

There are a lot of reasons why a wireless connection would vary between phones in the same area. It may be due to congestion, dead-zones, or the material around the phone. Metal within a home can weaken a wireless signal, and a thicker case can mean the phone inside is receiving a weaker signal.

We did run an outage check with the Zip code you provided us, the tower in your area is active, and the issue seems to be due to congestion. For better coverage we would recommend you to use WIFI calling: Learn about Wi-Fi Calling

Here are some ways to fix weak signal on your iPhone 14 Pro with AT&T:

  • Reset your network settings by going to Settings > General > Reset Network Settings.
  • Check if it's the phone being faulty by dialing 3001#12345# and looking for RSRP.
  • Turn off Wi-Fi Assistant.
  • Remove and re-insert the SIM card.
  • Improve a weak signal with a cell signal booster.
  • Set the iPhone cellular “Voice and Data” option to LTE only.

You can also try this troubleshooting tips as well, to help improve your device's connection:

  • Turn Airplane Mode off and back on. Turning this setting on will completely disconnect your phone from our wireless network, and turning it back off will help your phone refresh and reconnect to your network.
  • Rebooting your device. Rebooting your device will also refresh your connection to our network, and it'll help troubleshoot any other issue that may be occurring with your device.
  • Make sure your device's software is up to date. An outdated software version can cause various issues or bugs with your service or device. Update to to prevent this, and enhance your device's performance.

Please let us know if this helps.

I tried some of these things:

  • Reset your network settings by going to Settings > General > Reset Network Settings.  DONE, didn't help
  • Check if it's the phone being faulty by dialing 3001#12345# and looking for RSRP. - Tried - Got message "Error performing request. Unknown Error."
  • Turn off Wi-Fi Assistant. WI-FI calling is off
  • Remove and re-insert the SIM card.  I wouldn't know where to start!!  Bought the phone from AT&T and they sent someone to set it up.
  • Improve a weak signal with a cell signal booster. - This won't help when I'm outside (I only get 1 bar outside, too)
  • Set the iPhone cellular “Voice and Data” option to LTE only. DONE - Still only getting 1 signal bar.

I'm elderly, do not have a landline, and I rely solely on my phone service, so when it goes into "SOS" mode (which is it's current status), it concerns me a lot, as I can't make or receive calls, right?

Your assistance is greatly appreciated!

P.S.  It's a 14 Pro Max (if that makes a difference).  Thanks!

I also checked these suggestions:

  • Turn Airplane Mode off and back on. Turning this setting on will completely disconnect your phone from our wireless network, and turning it back off will help your phone refresh and reconnect to your network. - DONE; still getting SOS mode only
  • Rebooting your device. Rebooting your device will also refresh your connection to our network, and it'll help troubleshoot any other issue that may be occurring with your device. DONE - Still showing 1 bar 5G (sometimes briefly shows 5G+)
  • Make sure your device's software is up to date. An outdated software version can cause various issues or bugs with your service or device. Update to to prevent this, and enhance your device's performance.  Software is up to date - iOS 17.1.2

The only thing I haven't tried is "Remove and reinsert the SIM card."  It is my understanding that the iPhone 14 Pro Max has an eSIM card.

Thanks again!
