Phone number change

I just purchased a new phone from AT&T and it came with an assigned phone number. Is it possible after activation to change my phone number to a previous number I had with a different carrier?

you call at&t and ask to port your old number but they can only port active numbers so if your other account is closed then it cant be done @lizdance40 correct?

Yes. the account would have to be re-opened/refillled. only active numbers can be ported.
