You can switch anytime you want. AT&T hasn’t had contracts in over 4 years. You just have to pay off any phone installments in full before you can unlock them for a different provider.

Well as AT&T hasn't had contracts in years, switch whenever you want. Go with the provider that has coverage where you use it.

If by chance by "contract" you meant you are still paying off a phone (a common but perplexing mistake by the occasional user in the forum), you have to pay that off first. Or upon cancel you get the remaining installment on your final bill, which may result in forfeiting any remaining promotion on it.
