logging into your account requires a username and password, and may require two factor authentication code sent to your cellular phone. If you usually login with your telephone number that would indicate you are a prepaid user. Prepaid users have to pay full price for their phone, so you should not buy from AT&T you should be purchasing directly from Apple.
I log into my ATT app using my phone number all the time, and I’m not prepaid, never have been. Although I also have a user ID, using my phone number works the same for getting into my account.
