Preorders start Friday the 9th and then it's available on the 16th. I would recommend preorder if you want it on that date. Very slim chance you can walk into a store and get one on release day. It'll be a week or two more than likely before preorders are filled.

I have a grandfathered Unlimited Data plan from ATT and I am also eligible for "upgrade". Is there a way for me to keep my existing plan? It doesn't seem like it.

You can, but you're paying a lot to do that, you're keeping a plan that includes a phone "subsidy" and not getting any benefit. So you're paying a hidden $20 a month and not getting anything for it.
Are you really using "unlimited" amounts of data, I gave up unlimited and I'm saving money now...

@GLIMMERMAN76 Apple could have done so many things to help cut down on these issues.
They could have been including lightning earpods the last few years anyways, after getting use to it, many people might not have even cared when the jack disappeared.
Previously sold a cool car (or home stereo) wireless adaptor to work with the phones.
(Did they avoid saying bluetooth, or was that my imagination?)
They could have weened a lot of people away already...
At a minimum:
Had Lightning/Audio Y-adaptors available already so you could use it on your Aux port in the car or home stereo and be able to power/charge your iPhone at the same time.

If you are eligible for an upgrade, what kind of discount do you get on the iphone 7 plus?

$0 discount.
These days, upgrades only let you stop making payments on your old phone.
If your old phone is an iPhone you'd do better paying it off and selling it to Gazelle.com or eBay, you'll likely get more than those last 6-8 payments.

I thought the phones were cheaper if you were eligible for an upgrade 😞
We are grandfathered in on the unlimited plan.
Thanks for the info! We always pay for ours upfront, no monthly payments. So i guess the 'upgrade' now means nothing to us.

You are referring to contract subsidy sales, which are not offered by any carrier anymore.

Nope, no subsidized phones on those plans any more, that means you're "secretly" paying an extra $17.50 a line (approx.) to keep those unlimited plans (since that isn't going towards new phones any more). $35+$17.50= $52.50 a line.
Plus, you're paying for minutes and texting. If you're not using more than 15GB a month per line, you should really check into the Mobile Share plans... Even if you use more, it might still be cheaper for you...
