iPhone 12 cell plan question

I'm looking to get a iPhone 12 mini next month, but there's no 5G coverage in my area yet. So I don't want to have to change my cell plan until there's 5G in my area. So question is, can I keep my current plan and still get the 12 mini or do I have to upgrade my plan?
