Iphone 1 Unlock

Hello.

I am french, and I bought iphone 1 longtime ago in NYC.

Recently I found it, and want to use it. I have reboot the Iphone 1 with Apple store team to clean it, and it was fine ! So, I add a local french SIM, but impossible to make any call and have internet connection..

Iphone team said me that it is due to "locking operator", "US AT&T Service"

Please, What can I do?

AT&T service can help to unlock it? is it the reason?

Thank you

Fabien

Nothing you can do, the original iPhone can’t be unlocked. Even if it could, it likely won’t work on any carrier. It’s a 2G phone.

May be I was not clear enough;)

In fact I can have access to the phone (like photos, app, wifi) but the sim card doesn't work.

And already thank you for your concern, reply and help!

The phone is never going to work with a French SIM card.  It’s locked to a specific US carrier and would need to be unlocked to work with any other SIM, but it’s not possible to unlock the original iPhone.  Yes, you can turn it on, access the photos and apps, and connect to Wifi, but it will never work as a cell phone.  Even if you were in the US and put in the a SIM for the carrier it’s locked to, it likely wouldn’t work as a cell phone since the technology has moved on from that available when the phone was new.

But a long time ago I had my French SIM card that worked. Is it simply the evolution of technology that makes it no longer work? Does that mean no Iphone1 can work anymore?

Yes, it will not work anymore. The technology that the iPhone 1 used is no longer being used.

Even if the phone is unlocked, it sounds like it was hacked, which it may be how you've used it with a French SIM card, it's unlikely any carrier will allow it.  If hacked, it is legit relocked.

Also, the phone is no longer supported by Apple. There's no iTunes Store support for any applications that work on the phone, and new applications won't work on it.  So you can't add stuff to it.  You can't update it.

Hi 12213A, let's look into your iPhone1 unlock request.

As mentioned by the ACE's, the original iPhone is no longer supported by Apple. The device would no longer be compatible to work with the AT&T network.

Since most carriers are phasing out 3G technology, the phone would most likely not work with any carrier since that device used 2G technology.

We hope this information helps, and thank you for reaching out to the AT&T Community Forums.
