Internet access in Japan

If I buy an AT&T day pass, is that all I need to access the internet via my iPhone and iPad? I don't intend to make any local calls.

You don’t buy a day pass, you add the day pass to your line. When you use cellular data or send a text or make any calls, you are charged $10 and all usage for the next 24 hours is covered and yes, that gives you access to the internet. That includes using your phone as a hotspot. Presuming your iPad has cellular service, it won’t roam so you’ll either need to use WiFi or your phone’s hotspot. Supposedly free WiFi is widely available in Japan so you may not even need to use the day pass.

Hi there @mkbilyk, we are happy to hear your response about the Internet in Japan.

Thank you @sandblaster for your input. Let's shed some light with more information about using your data while abroad:

  • Be sure you have an AT&T unlimited, AT&T 4GB, or Mobile Share plan.
  • Pay a daily fee for each 24-hour period that you talk, text, or use data within an included country. Only one daily fee is charged even when you travel to multiple included countries in the same day. The daily fee applies to each line on your account using International Day Pass.
    • For 1 line, it’s $10 a day.
    • For each additional line on the same account used in the same 24-hour period, there’s a daily charge of $5.
    • You'll never pay more than 10 daily fees per line, per bill period.
    • You can see a list of included countries at att.com/globalcountries.

We thank you for reaching out to the AT&T Community Forums and hope this information helps.

I'm going to throw an additional warning at you, do not allow that iPad to roam in Japan. It is not covered by AT&T roaming agreements, you will be charged if that iPad connects to cellular data outside the USA, and the cost is considerable.
