I got a locked iPhone from the used market

Hi there,

I live in Austria and bought an unopened Iphone used.

I checked the IMEI before buying and everything was clean. Unfortunately, the IMEI check shows no contract, which is why I found out very late that I could not use the iPhone.

Unfortunately, I am now a little desperate because I can no longer reach the seller and I paid in cash.

Through a second EMEI check for a few euros, I have now found out that the iPhone is blocked on At & T and that there are also unpaid bills.

How can I work with you so that my damage remains as small as possible.

I've never been to America, so I can't use AT&T.

Many thanks

Hello @Andybabic

We're sorry to hear you're having trouble with your device unlock. Allow us to point you in the right direction!

It is best recommend to contact the seller/owner of the phone for additional assistance with submitting a Device Unlock Request on your behalf.

Please know if the cellphone was not purchased through AT&T or an AT&T authorized retailer, and has past due or unpaid balance, the device will be ineligible to unlock.

We hope this information helps, and thanks for reaching out to us!

The unlock portal is and there’s a spot for “not an att customer”, however it will only work if the phone is in fact paid in full, requested to unlock by account holder and account is currently in good standing. Unfortunately that’s the risk of buying online private party.

You’re stuck. AT&T will not unlock it until the debt is paid off. The lock is actually through Apple servers, not AT&T. So there is no easy or permanent way around the lock.

Your best bet to recoup your loses is to sell the phone to someone who is going to use it inside the United States, on AT&T.
