How to turn off 5G on my iPhone 12 Pro

I lost 5G for a while and was concerned at first. It went to LTE and I actually had a better connection. It suddenly came back and everywhere I go I have one bar. My service is so much worse now- I can’t watch videos, webpages won’t load, photos don’t send over messages.

I went to settings -> cellular and turned 5G off then restarted my phone. 5G is still on instead of going back to LTE like it was a couple of days ago.

Is there another step in turning off 5G so I can actually use my phone for the $118 I pay each month? I don’t have WiFi at home, so I can’t just connect to that and use my phone.

Thank you!

Hello rarino, we're here to help you with your network settings.

View cellular network signal strength and turn Wi-Fi Assist, international roaming, or your mobile data connection on or off.

Change cellular network settings

  1. From the home screen, select the Settings app.
  2. Select Cellular. To turn cellular data on or off, select the  Cellular Data switch.

Note: To turn LTE data on or off select Cellular Data Options > Enable LTE > desired option. Learn more from the Apple support article About cellular data settings and usage on your iPhone.
  3. To turn cellular data on or off for individual apps and services, scroll to and select the switch next to the desired app or service.

Another option would be to reach out to Apple Support at 1-800-APLCARE.

Why are you restarting the phone?  Just turn 5G off.  If you do restart the phone, then go back and check it’s still off, or turn it off again if it defaulted back to 5G when the phone restarted.

On an iPhone 12, if you have a 5G Plan, your options are 5G On, 5G Auto, or LTE. I have a 5G Plan but leave my phone on LTE all of the time because 5G reception is still spotty around our area. Sometimes the phone will indicate 5Ge but that's just AT&Ts enhanced LTE.
