How do I text Australia?
Will be traveling there soon. How do I send texts both from the U.S. and while in Australia? I purchased an international plan which will begin May 9. I receive multiple answers from various AT&T operators. Some say to use 011, some not. Same with city code (2 for Sydney). None have gotten through thus far.

Hey there @scallop!
I totally understand wanting to make sure you have the dialing pattern for international texting. There are a few people I message with regularly overseas, and I would be happy to assist!
Your trip sounds like it will be fantastic; I hope you get to take lots of pictures. Similar to the way the state area code is here in the States, Australia has another code to insert after the country code.
Based on my research, you will need to dial 011 and then the country code for Australia which is 61. You will need the city code for Sydney when making calls to local numbers. The Country Calling Codes website is an awesome resource for identifying which digits need to go where.
After selecting the correct direction of your call with the main graphic, you will need to select the State/Province from the dropdown and select New South Wales. You will then be able to select Sydney from the list.
Another thing to keep in mind is there are Mobile Codes which will affect how to send text messages. In the case of Australia, the code would be 4. The dialing pattern would be 011 + 61 + 4 + the number of the mobile device you are wanting to reach.
I hope this information helps. Have a wonderful trip!
