How do I access my att.net eMail account from the "Mail" function on my iPhone

I am getting errors when attempting to sign up to my att.net eMail account through the Mail function on my iPhone6. After I entered my user name and password, it tried to verify and then came back with a message saying password for  "imap.mail.att.net is incorrect". After I changed the Incoming Host to "inbound.att.net" as what is used on my PC, the verification process came back with a message "Cannot connect using SSL. Do you want to try setting up the account without SSL? Y/N?" It is very frustrating. Can someone help? Thanks.

Hello @Abe72Chen!

I understand the importance of being able to receive your email on your device. I am happy to help!

First, you will need to make sure you have the correct settings entered. Please review the following:

Tap Add Mail Account and enter the following information:

  • Name: Your name
  • Email: Your AT&T email address
  • Password: Your AT&T email password
  • Description: enter AT&T

Choose imap under incoming mail server and enter the following information:

  • Hostname: imap.mail.att.net
  • Username: email
  • Password: your email password

Scroll down and under outgoing mail server, enter the following information:

  • Hostname: smtp.mail.att.net
  • Username: email
  • Password: your email password
  • Tap Save and select your email address on the next screen.
  • Scroll down and under outgoingmail server, choose SMTP.

Under Main server, select smtp.mail.att.net and make sure the following information is displayed.

  • SSL: ssl
  • Serverport: 465

Tap Done and go to the previous screen. Choose Advanced and make sure the following information is correct:

  • SSL: ssl
  • Serverport: imap.mail.att.net

Go back to the previous screen. Restart your iPhone to finish the setup.

If the error message Cannot Connect Using SSL shows up after verifying the above settings, please try these following steps:

  • Tap No, you do not want to try setting up the account without SSL, tap Save.
  • Tap the email account you just attempted to setup, scroll down to tap SMTP.
  • Tap the Primary Server.
  • Tap OFF to turn the SSL setting on, and then tap Server Port to change it to 465.
  • Tap Done.
  • Tap AT&T SMTP Server and then tap OFF to turn the server on.
  • Tap Done.
  • Tap Account Info, then tap Advanced.
  • Verify the incoming Use SSL setting is set to OFF.
  • Tap Account Info, and then tap Done.

I hope this helps! Have an awesome day!

Hi, Jenn:

1) Appreciate your detailed instruction. However, upon following through the steps, I am still getting (after a minute or two of my iPhone attempting to make a connection) error messages, such as "Can not get mail", "Can not send mail", "The IMAP server IMAP.mail.att.net is not responding", etc. at various steps. One possibility is that I did not fully follow the steps correctly, because many of the keywords and button legends in your instruction do not seem to match with what I got on my iPhone6 screen. Anyone of these mismatches could have thrown me off the track. Could you please verify the interactions with an actual iPhone6 and then refine the instructions?

2) One thing puzzles me a lot is why does this setup take so many tedious steps to do? My other eMail accounts seem to require just the username and password pair to get going. Could you shed some light on this?

Thank you so much,

Abe

Good morning @Abe72Chen!

Thank you for your response and providing these details. Your att.net email address may be merged with Yahoo! This is no longer supported. Please review our eSupport article about how to unmerge your att.net email account from Yahoo.

I definitely understand how following several steps can be troubling while trying to setup an email on your device. The server settings are specific as to what ports to use, etc.

Hope this helps!

Hi, Jenn:

1)   Instead of "Choose imap under incoming mail server ...   ", my iPhone6 gave me only "Next" button to click upon the initial entry of a few account information. It led to "Verifying" then came back with error message saying that it could not connect ... So, the rest of steps became totally uncertain!

2)   My iPhone6 OS is currently Version 11.2.6 (15D100). Is there anyway that you can find an iPhone(6) to verify the steps that you gave to me?

Thanks a lot,
