eSim not working

Hi! I tried to convert my sim into an eSim in the cellular section of ios (iphone 12), it said There was an error, unable to complete action so I didn't try again, but now it says Sos calls only and I don't have any service, I have tried to convert to eSim again on different Wi-Fi networks, but I always get the same error. Any help? (I have also tried restarting my device but it's still saying Sos calls only)

Hello Community,

Although an older thread, we know this question gets a lot of views.  Below is a solution to help resolve this issue.

Based on the “SOS calls only” error that you’re getting, it looks like your physical SIM card was deactivated without being converted into an eSIM. Once a SIM card has been deactivated, it can’t be reactivated, so we highly recommend you get another SIM card, either at our Online Shop or a nearby AT&T store so we can try this again.

Once you have another physical SIM card inserted into the device, make sure your connected to the AT&T network and follow these steps to convert the SIM into an eSIM:

  1. Go int your device’s Settings.
  2. Select Cellular.
  3. Select Convert to eSIM.
    1. A convert to eSIM screen appears advising your plan is associated to a physical SIM that can be converted.
  4. Select Convert Cellular Plan.
    1. A convert eSIM message displays advising you to remove the physical SIM once it’s converted.
  5. Select Convert to eSIM.
    1. You’ll see a screen with your phone number that’ll display a “Request sent” indicator, which will refresh and change to “Activating”. Once the activation is complete, the indicator will disappear.
  6. Complete a test call to confirm service is working.

As mentioned above, this will deactivate your physical SIM. Please let us know if you’re still experiencing this error, and if you are, we’ll able to do this inside a DM if needed.

You probably have to get a new physical SIM, or get an eSIM at a store.  It sounds like the conversion process failed in creating the eSIM, but succeeded in deactivating your physical SIM (which prevents further attempts at conversion).
