eSIM for iPhone XS, XS MAX and XR

I have an AT&T nano-SIM card and another nano-SIM card with Chinese carrier. I learned that the unlocked iphone Xs MAX can have a nano-SIM and an eSIM working together. But the Chinese carrier didn't support eSIM. So I want to transform my AT&T nano-SIM card into eSIM so that my two phone number can both work on the iphone. How can I change my AT&T nano-SIM card to eSIM?

I purchased the phone from Apple and paid for it in full. It is my understanding that it is unlocked unless I am missing something

Only if you purchased a Sim free phone.  If you bought the ATT version it’s locked, but you can request unlock.

was already posted in post #5 but anyway.

after my plan was changed back I have a fully functional iphone XS with esim (AT&T) and another physical sim card.

The activation process for the AT&T rep was new but easy. Identical to the physical SIMs they just have to scan the ICCID code to link it to your plan and account.

The activation with the iphone worked on the 3rd try. I think the iphone needed a internet connection and it started working once it was connected to the in-store WiFi. (other tries failed as it was not reading the full QR code).

I was the first customer at the AT&T corporate store on this and you just need to convince the representative to work with you and try it.

No bug about having a blocker primary sim or anything else. using an Iphone XS (unlocked) running on iOS 12.1 with a  Mobile Share Flex plan.

So I hope this helped. I am finally really happy and not the guinea pig any more ;).

Good Luck!

Now if only they can teach everyone else. I guess you can take a head of lettuce for your trouble as the guinea pig.

When I bought three XRs from AT&T for my kids, I had an activation issue with one of them. When calling, I gave them the imei of the esim. I don’t know how it worked for one day unless the guy made a mistake and used the recorded nano sim and it switched later. Anyways, long story short ... his phone service stopped working. I called AT&T and they were baffled as to why it wasn’t working because the emei (I thought it should work) is the same on their end. His phone service started working again after the 12.1 update. So I’m sure you can just call and give them the esim emei.

Nope - They don't. I spent my money on a dual sim phone in hope to consolidate my work and personal phone. Failure on both ATT and Apple.

@Rteelock  Looks like european wireless carriers are not having a problem with eSIM.

Do we have an update on this thread? iOS 12.1 has been out for a bit... can I finally quit carrying a biz phone and a personal phone?

does AT&T have the “visual voicemail issues” worked out yet?

I already know the esim works because that’s how my son’s phone is working. I spend my morning with AT&T and Apple support. Conclusion was that it will work, but you will have to go into the AT&T store and give them the digital sim number. If you don’t want to do that, AT&T will have an update in early 2019 (according to AT&T rep) with an automated process of moving to the esim.

So how are dual-SIM users selecting which number to message, call, or pull data from? Has anyone seen voicemails and how the biz line is distinguished from the personal line?

can the eSIM be “moved” temporarily from phone to phone? ie: biz and personal lines in the same phone, but handing off the “biz phone” to a manager for the weekend or vacation?

Evidently, there are some problems with the dual sim that will not allow the phone to work properly. Until the bugs are worked out, the dual sim will not be able to be activated.

@Fl_retire

the EU has had dual sim android phones for years so they were ready for this.  The us carriers have shunned dual sim phones all these years and now apple is forcing it on them.
