eSIM for iPhone XS, XS MAX and XR
I have an AT&T nano-SIM card and another nano-SIM card with Chinese carrier. I learned that the unlocked iphone Xs MAX can have a nano-SIM and an eSIM working together. But the Chinese carrier didn't support eSIM. So I want to transform my AT&T nano-SIM card into eSIM so that my two phone number can both work on the iphone. How can I change my AT&T nano-SIM card to eSIM?

@Showb1zz I checked for the IOS 12.1 update on my iPhone Xs and IPad Pro and it was not available. Apple has released IOS 12.1 beta 5 to developers and public beta users but not to the general public. ATT will enable the ability to use the eSIM after the public release of IOS 12.1.
Do not know if the Xs has to be unlocked to use the ESIM or physical SIM with another carrier or not. Purchased my Xs SIM free from Apple so I do not have a problem.

Below is from 9 to 5 mac
Unfortunately, eSIM adoption seems to be a mixed bag at the moment. While the three major U.S carriers: Verizon, T-Mobile, and AT&T announced support for the feature, all three have seemingly pulled out, noting that support for eSIM is coming later this year. This means no major carrier in the U.S. is currently supporting this feature. Outside of the U.S., support is limited but you can check here to see if your carrier support the feature.

Hi all,
We are seeing a few questions regarding eSIM and wanted to give you all the information we can on how to transfer your number to an eSIM and the requirements to use another carrier.
Using AT&T and Another Carrier
In order to use another a SIM from another carrier, your device may need to be unlocked. You can unlock your device via the AT&T Device Unlock Portal. It may take 1-2 weeks for your request to be completed.
Note: Your device must meet the requirements in order to be unlocked. If your device does not meant them, it cannot be unlocked until they are met. For example, the device must be paid off before it can be unlocked. If your device belongs to another carrier, AT&T cannot unlock it.
Changing AT&T Number to eSIM
In order to move your number from a physical SIM to an eSIM, we will need to move things on our end and process a SIM Replacement. Chat with us to get that taken care of.
How to Get an eSIM
To get an eSIM, you can visit a Corporate Retail location. We do recommend setting up an appointment. If you ordered your device from att.com, you may receive a QR code.
How to Install Your eSIM
You're all set!

Hi, @jancey,
We'd love to set you straight on eSIMs and not leave you in the dark. At the moment, all the major carriers in the US are holding off supporting it until later this year at the earliest. Could you let us know what you need to know?
We hope you're having a great week!

Hey, I have a question about the new iphone dual sim model.
I know that at&t is available for esim for new iphone. But if I buy the iphone xr from att, can I directly unlock it so that I can put the chinese sim card in the spot and using esim for at&t? Or I should just wait for Iphone XR unlock version which Im not sure its gonna coming out or not

Att would have to activate the Esim for your ATT service. They can activate e-sim on iPads and watches, so they should just activate service on the Esim. If you use prepaid, you cannot use the Esim.

You do not need a new number, you can move your existing number to postpaid.
You would have to have a postpaid account Account and service to activate the Esim

Will the dual sim technology on the IPhone XS allow a domestic sim and an international sim (esim) to be utilized on the same device?

The eSIM will not be active out of the box, so until Apple releases the software update that enables eSIM use, you are limited to the physical SIM in the phone.
Regarding AT&T eSIMs, AT&T hasn’t put anything out about how they will deal with the eSIM, or whether they will even offer eSIMs for the new iPhones. It just speculation at this point.
