E-SIM activation as primary on iPhone

I have an iPhone XS Max. Running 12.1 i chatted with support and they claim i need a new number for the e sim. And that it can only run as a secondary. I’ve been informed that it can be primary. Kind of defeats the point of having a dual sim ( e sim) can anyone please shed some light on this.

Hello @pharmd,

We can definitely provide you with some more information about Using Dual SIM with an eSIM. An eSIM is a digital SIM that allows you to activate a cellular plan from your carrier without having to use a physical nano-SIM. If you're wanting to use Dual SIM with your iPhone, one of your phone numbers will be primary, and the other phone number will be secondary. One of your cellular plans uses a nano-SIM and the other uses an eSIM. Let us know if you have any further questions or concerns.

The esim has some issues right now so the us carrier have stopped activating them.

I’m fully aware and understand how e sim and dual sim technology work. I’ve called a couple on my existing current plan with att. I want the phone line I currently have to be the esim and free up my sim tray for travel. Can you help me accomplish this? Because no one in customer service seems to understand what I am inquiring about. I’ve spoken to Apple and it’s something that can be done.

Any idea when it will be back online?

the dates have been all over the place for all the carriers. 1st of the year to 1st of December.  Verizon has a problem where their sim is 2g only on both slots if the esim is used.  ATT has a voicemail and wifi calling problem.

eSIM activation in the US was not "stopped" - it never started. Apple has always said that the feature is not available yet and will be coming in the future.

Apple.com will say different. It is active. It’s on the carriers currently to provide the QR code or activate it on the network. The e sim on the iPhone has been successfully deployed on carrier outside the US. but I’m really curious as to why we’re having issues since the Apple Watch and other devices have e sims and are active. Hope this to be cleared up soon. I really would love to have the ability to travel without having to shuffle SIM cards.

The below is from appletoolbox website:

https://appletoolbox.com/2018/10/how-to-use-dual-sim-and-esim-on-iphone-xr-and-xs/#How_To_Set-Up_eSIM_on_Your_iPhone_XR_and_XS

  • I want to transfer my primary line out from my nano-SIM and reprogram it to my iPhone’s eSIM. That way I can free up the SIM card slot and use a physical nano-SIM when traveling. I think this is possible but not sure–any thoughts?
  • Once Apple releases iOS 12.1 (or higher), you should be able to designate the eSIM as your primary line and keep the physical SIM slot open for traveling and so forth. I think this since you can choose which one (physical or eSIM) is your primary number/service

[corrected incorrect reference to official Apple website]

You guys really know how to frustrate people. Why can’t you read what the poster is asking before posting some generic answer that has already been posted. Seriously. This is irritating.

A simple Google search shows you it's not available and apple has it notated on the page about it.

Here is the easiest way to show you as apple updated that page yesterday.
