Do I need to upgrade my SIM with iPhone 12 mini

Hello,

Next week I will be upgrading from an iPhone X to an iPhone 12 mini (unlocked, ordered directly from Apple).  Do I need to go by an ATT store and get a new SIM card, or just move my current one to the new phone?

Thanks,

Jesse

You should just be able to swap SIMs.  Some people have claimed that you need a new SIM to get 5G service, but I’m not sure that’s true.  I’d try it with your SIM first and then if there are issues, go for a new SIM since I believe they will charge you $5 for a new one.

If there are issues, first verify the imei associated with your SIM card has updated to the new phone. Usually iPhones update automatically but I’ve seen at least one post from an iPhone 12 owner who was not getting 5G because the imei was still their old iPhone 11. Once they got the imei updated, they got 5G.

I just ordered an iPhone 12 Max without a SIM card directly from Apple. The confirmation email from Apple recommend I order a new SIM card from my carrier, which is AT&T. I am replacing an iPhone XS Max. Do I need a new SIM card in order to get 5G service? I live in Philly and there are new 5G boxes in my neighborhood, so I know AT&T offers 5G here. I also have an unlimited everything plan, so do I need a new SIM card and if so, which one should I order?

I just ordered the iPhone 12 Pro Max from Apple.  They say I need to get a new sim from my carrier instead of using my existing sim or I won’t be able to access all the features.  What sim do I need to use with my at prepaid plan?

Any new prepaidSIM card will be fine.

Hi All,

To be able to use 5G on any of our devices, there are 3 criteria you'll need to meet.

  • 5G capable device (smartphone) - Must be updated and activated on your account
  • UICC-G or higher SIM (Nano SIM - Usually any device sold within the last few years will have this SIM type)
    • In addition, any new phone includes this SIM type and can be activated
  • 5G eligible rate plan

Thanks
