Device unlock question

I bought a iphone 4 from someone, and it is locked under AT&T so I went and filled out the request and I got an email saying, "Your Reuest to unlock an AT&T device was not approved, We can't complete your request". I called at&t customer support and they told me there is nothing they can do. Really so what I understand is someone that no one that works at AT&T can overide this becuase the reason why I got denied is because of the previous owner not me. It's kind of unacceptable that no one at this company has access to help me and do some sort of override. If anyone knows how to fix this please reply.

That is the risk you take buying a used phone.  If the previous owner didn't pay off their phone, then AT&T does not have to unlock it.

Return it if your purchase was predicated on it being unlockable.

@ErfanKhajeh If they won't take it back, you'd sell it.

If you wanted it to work on a different network, you should have made them unlock it before you bought it.

Typical AT&T response. Take AT&T to Small Claims Court. It is your right to do so and the time and cost are minimal. Then watch how fast they unlock your device. Or at least they will agree to buy the device for what you paid for it.

Only in America are devices sold with carrier locks on them. Everywhere else in the world, the GSM device is not tied to a contract for wireless service. Your device can run on any network and there are many more network choices competing for your business.

I am dealing with a similar issue now except it is MY device, I bought it and paid cash for it over a year ago. It should have been delivered to me unlocked when I bought it at the AT&T store.

Now AT&T is dragging their feet about unlocking it. I have moved my service to a competitor due to AT&T's outrageous international roaming charges.

I am taking AT&T to court and suing them. Don't waste your time talking to their customer service drones. They have no authority to give you any satisfaction.

@NormG1 And what is it you're taking AT&T for?

If the phone is not paid off, then they have the right to not unlock it.

This is the downside of buying used phones. This phone could be stolen and it's never been paid for and you think this is AT&T's fault?  How about asking for the seller for a reciept?
