Data use while connected to Wi-Fi

I connect my iPad to my Wi-Fi when I work from home. For whatever reason, I got an alert that I had used all of my EXTRA GIG of data while I was working this morning. I checked the data usage and it displayed it was using hundreds of MB of data at 8 AM when I was asleep (and still connected to Wi-Fi). What's going on here?

Data reporting is not real time. The time on the data usage is when the usage was reported, not when it was actually used. The actual usage could be from many hours to days earlier. Also, simply being on WiFi won’t necessarily stop cellular data usage. The only way to guarantee no cellular data usage is to turn cellular data off.

Did you by chance plug your iPad into recharge overnight? Because it sounds like it disconnected from Wi-Fi and probably backed up to iCloud, it may also have done automatic updates.

Backups to iCloud should be WiFi only. I don’t believe you can override that. Software updates, on the other hand, could be over cellular.
