Changing NAT type on mobile hotspot

I recently switched to att for the unlimited plan solely to use the hotspot for playing online with a ps4. It will connect and play to some games but I cannot talk to any of my

friends due to a strict nat type otherwise known as nat 3. I need this changed to nat 2 as its on your end. I have tried the tethering work arounds people have mentiomed but none of them have been confirmed to work and i can assure you they do not from what i have tried. I only switched to att for this if this cannot be fixed i will have to change providers again as i have wasted $80 on this plan

Good morning @Pippin123,

I apologize as you cannot change the NAT type on your mobile device.  This is because mobile hotspots and smartphones do not support UPnP routing.  For further assistance I recommend you reach out to PlayStation support.

Thank you for participating in the Community Forums, and a fantastic weekend.

Still can't change NAT type to this year? Is AT&T even trying to improve their services? Or they just want to keep charging for subpar service?

False. Verizon has open type NAT on their hotspots. Its your network, not my phone. With the explosion of gaming, it is unbelievable that ATT has not addressed this issue.

Oh, wait.. your ATT, so its entirely believable.

I'm having issues with this now too. For 2 years i've been gaming with my hotspot, i have the same plan and the NAT has always been strict but it's never been a problem, it's always acted like it was open. I could connect to anyone, anytime, host games, party chat. Mid afternoon wednesday something changed, its worthless. Why do they offer unlimited plans for cell phones? Do people really need that much data to play with Facebook and watch adult sites? These wireless plans are way more expensive than DSL so i don't undertstand why using my hotspot to tether to my xbox would be problematic. Talking to the AT&T customer support yesterday the lady was silly enough to tell me "phones aren't supposed to be compatible with consoles, you should be thankful it worked as long as it did". Thankful she said, i should be thankful that a service i'm paying for is properly serving its purpose. I should just accept the fact that it's no longer serving its purpose and move on. I hear Verizon phones have better NAT type and less UpNP restrictions and the same unlimited plan. This hotspot was my little backdoor, i can't DSL or broadband here(idk why but it's availible accross the street. Everyone at AT&T is acting like they're clueless, it's very simple, when something works and suddenly no longer works, there's a cause for that. Cause and affect.

Wait wait wait. Okay so I've been using my mobile hotspot on my Samsung Galaxy S6 Active for gaming since January this year. I've always had a successful UPnP and NAT type was strict but never had any issues. This is a BRAND NEW problem that I just started having yesterday. Since we can't get decent home internet where we live through AT&T we have to use our mobile hotspots. Our home internet averages about 500 KBPS which is unusable, so the only option for internet outside of our phones is our mobile hotspot. How am I supposed to have usable internet with this problem?

Same issue. Been using hotspot to game for 2 and a half years with no issues even with strict nat. After system update on wed sept 26th I can no longer utilize anything on my xbox that requires internet(party chat, digital games, etc).

Also I've noticed that after 2am est the past 3 nights it has started working again. Will try again tonight after 2am to see if it's the same. Talking with customer service they tried to tell me it's an issue with my xbox but I have zero issues connecting to my buddies hotspot..

For anyone using mobile hotspot and unlimited plans on your phones; the hotspot has a cap of 10 or 15 gigs.  It’s set the limit from the start, but has not enforced cap on their end for a year.

If any of you think ATT intended for mobile hotspot/cellular plans to be used for gaming or streaming you’re kidding yourselves.  Don’t know if they screw with the system to make it more difficult or not.  The more people hop on unlimited the worse it is for everyone.

Pray for 5g mobile home internet or move, ‘cause the current systems aren’t designed for unfettered use.

I don’t think most people need unlimited on their phones as they have Home internet and wifi.

YEAP! VERIZON WILL WORK AWESOMELY FOR YOU THEN! Should have went there first man. There hotspot are NAT type 2 (moderate). They get 22 mbs on just 3 bars. Thats more than more enough plus. They only recommend 3 to 4 mbs for gaming. Att wont even give u 1mbs. They only give. Like 40 kbs🤢😡 Yuck! Thats just plain sad. To brake it down a little. Theres 1000 kilobytes (kbs) in 1 megabyte (mbs) there are 1000 megabyte in one gigabyte (gbs). The s is per second. So att will only give .0040% of what you paid for. Just a big scam for money. Verizon is a business before they provide what is paid for actually better than what u pay for in my opinion. Hope this helped. VERIZONS THE WAY TO GO. ATT WILL NOT GET ANOTHER CENT OF MY MONEY.

It took me a few days, however, I got my att NAT open WITHOUT a nighthawk or other hotspot routers. First I went to https://troubleshoot.att.com/devicetroubleshoot

Then went to wireless, then internet, then other issues (in description it should tell you other issues is for hotspot issues). Then it should start troubleshooting and give you a message with something like "an update was sent to your device". The first step of the troubleshoot made my NAT moderate.  Then on the Xbox go to settings, network settings, advanced, alternate port selection and select different port other than 307X.  Hit "B" and test NAT type.  If its moderate or strict like it was for me go back to https://troubleshoot.att.com/devicetroubleshoot

And this time wireless, then internet, then other issues, allow first step with message of something like "an update was sent to your device" and when it asks if it fixed issue hit something like "no" or "issue persists" to allow the next step in the troubleshooter. Once again the troubleshooter will load, it should eventually give you the message with something like "restart your device to apply update".  Turn OFF your phone (not restart), leave off for 30 sec to 1 min.  Turn it back on then turn on hotspot.  Give it a few mins then check NAT on Xbox. If still moderate or strick go back to advanced settings, alternate port selection and select a different port.  This might not work for everyone but it worked for me. And so far I have had to repeat these steps after I turnoff hotspot or it disscontects due to inactivity. So you will probubly have to do this every time you want to game on your hotspot. Also, it might not work for everyone.

Hope this helps!!

No wireless option to choose from, just internet option. When tapping/clicking that, it tries to troubleshoot internet issues on my phone. And when trying to troubleshoot hotspot, it acts as if I'm using a router... Any idea what I'm doing wrong here?
