Can I use old iPhone XR charger with iPhone 12?

An employee from AT&T came to help set up my new iphone 12. I previously had an iphone XR. I was told by the employee that I could no longer use my old charging cord/block because it would “blow up the battery” and cause issues using my phone. So she suggested buying the new C-charging block that connects to the charger that came with the iphone 12. Is it true that I can’t use my old charger? If not, is there a way to get a refund because I was misinformed by an AT&T employee?

No, that is not true. Any refund would depend on the return policy. I don’t know what that is for accessories. Not sure what you mean by “connects to the charger that came with the iphone 12”, iPhone 12’s don’t come with a charger. They only come with charging cord which has a mini USB connector. All you need to use with an existing charger is a USB adapter.

iPhone 12s come with a charging cable that has a USB-C connector for the charger side, but no charger.  The phone side connector is still the old lightning connector.  The older iphones came with a standard USB cable and a USB charging brick.

if you want to use the cable that comes in the box with an iPhone 12, you’ll need to use a charger with a USB-C port.  The employee was wrong in saying that the phone will “blow up” if you use the old charging cable and charger.  Using the standard USB cable and USB charger will work fine, they will just take a bit longer because it doesn’t have the fast charge that you can get via USB-C.

Or a USB-C to standard USB adapter, which I am using to connect to my old chargers.

Regardless, the statement that the iPhone 12 comes with a cable that has a mini USB connector is wrong.  It comes with a USB-C connector, and you can’t simply use it with the USB charging brick that used to come with iPhones without a special adapter that you have to buy separately.

@dwill05 Sorry, I used the term “mini USB” thinking was the same as USB-C. Unfortunately, it’s too late to edit.
