AT&T locked my unlocked phone bought from the Apple Store

I am a long time AT&T wireless customer. This past Friday, February 6, I switched my cellular service from AT&T wireless to Xfinity mobile which I believe is actually Verizon. All three phones that are on AT&T wireless we’re all purchased from the Apple store, unlocked. My sons phones iPhones switched over to Xfinity with no issue. However, it is now day three and my phone is still locked by AT&T. I did not buy my phone from them nor did I purchase my phone on any sort of installment plan, I purchased it out right from the Apple store in my hometown. I have been on the phone with AT&T customer service twice, once Friday and once yesterday. They told me that they will escalate this to the highest level and I should have an unlocked phone via an email from AT&T wireless within 24 hours. When this didn’t happen on Saturday, I called them again and I was told that this was going to receive even higher attention and that I should have a resolution within 1:30 hours. After two hours nothing happened, and now it’s been 24 hours since I last spoke with the customer service rep. I did make sure my balance with AT&T was at zero before I did the transfer of providers, So I really do not know what the issue is. The other really frustrating part, is that in addition to no phone service via my current provider, I can’t even go back to AT&T and use their service. So my phone is “dead in the water”.

I’m actually in the mall today and was thinking of going over to the AT&T store, however I don’t wanna waste my time. Does anyone have any additional advice for me? I was thinking that possibly I should wait till tomorrow because the weekend will have passed and I possibly may see resolution through my attempts this weekend. Thoughts?

IPhones are not locked by the carrier. IPhones are locked by Apple's us Flex activation policy.
If Apple had sold you a Sim free unlocked phone, it could not be locked by any carrier. If it is indeed locked, Apple sold you the wrong phone, AT&T had nothing to do with it.
AT&T retail stores can do nothing to unlock a phone.

Did you submit an unlock request through the portal?

I contacted ATT support and they told me that my phone is locked by ATT wireless. They also said that it would be resolved within 24 hours, but it wasn't. Apple said phones are locked by the carrier, not apple. ugh

Apple said phones are locked by the carrier, not apple.

The point is Apple activation servers control the locking/unlocking process but only the carrier can tell Apple to update their servers to unlock a phone.

And again, if Apple sold you a SIM free phone, it could not be locked to any carrier. Apple sold you the wrong phone.
If still under Apple warranty, or applecare+, I would be asking questions of Apple.

So you posted that you had a problem on Sunday, February 9th. And on Monday the 10th you received an email from AT&T telling you that the phone was unlocked.
So we have been posting back and forth all week why?

Is there still a problem?

I’m on someone else’s contract as a user. I also bought a new iPhone and have gave my part of payment every month since. Service was cut off (long story short) and my phone is locked. When I googled it, it says that as long as I buy a prepaid AT&T card (that’s who our service is with) that it would work. But it’s not so does anyone know if this should be working?

A locked phone will still work with a prepaid AT&T SIM, however it won’t work if the phone is blacklisted.  Are you sure that the phone is simply locked to AT&T and not blacklisted?  If your service was “cut off”, blacklisted seems a more likely scenario.
