Adding on a “Bring My Own Device” to my account

I would like to know how to add my own Apple  1st Generation (Model number A1396) to my account.
I would need AT&T to send me a SIM card and add the device on their end.

But, what do I do on my end, in the meantime?
Thank you for your input.

You can add an LTE device.

First generation iPhone is a 2G device and will not work on any us carrier. It also cannot be unlocked.  AT&T already shut down 2g in 2017.  3 g is also (actively) shutting down.

You cannot activate a 3G device anymore either.

AT&T requires a phone that us voice over LTE capable. The oldest compatible iPhone for that is iPhone 6.

You can add a line and have a SIM card mailed to you, but you must have a compatible device in order to use service.

@JBayudang  should know this if he works in an authorized retail or call center.
