"V20 NOT supported" says LG Support

A flagship feature of the LG V20 is it's ES9218 Quad DAC which allows for the device to playback high resolution audio files at their native resolution. This is one of the very few phones that has the hardware to do this. However, because of a simple mis-understanding of how this DAC works, AT&T has effectively disabled this feature. LG has told me that specific to the AT&T version of the V20 high resolution audio is "not supported". Here is how AT&T can fix this and some background on the problem.

The problem can be fixed if AT&T would include the LG Music app/player in their next update.

The Android operating system expects all audio to be resampled to 16 bit/44.1khz (or 16/48khz) before sending to the DAC. There is no native support within Android to do anything else. For this reason all installable music players resample audio into this format before playback on the device. Resampling high resolution audio destroys the whole reason for having high resolution audio. Instead of modifying the Android OS on the V20 LG made the decision to release, with the phone, an audio player which bypasses the Android audio path. The LG audio application sends the audio directly to the high resolution DAC on the V20. Therefore it's the only software which is able to present the full resolution of the file to the DAC without crushing it in a resampling opperation. Except AT&T decided to remove this application from the Android build when they released the V20 on their network. In conclussion, LG told me that without the LG music application high resolution becomes "not supported".

AT&T, please go talk to your device team and workout how to include the LG Music application in an update to the phone. This would enable this flagship feature. As of now it cannot be recommened that anyone buy the V20 on the AT&T network because without this application this feature is "not supported". Thank you.

Anabel,

I sincerely thank you for your response. This type of issue is so easily overlooked as being “small” but it truly is at the core of what makes this phone special. I look forward to hearing what can be done to get this app included.
