Text messages converted to MMS

Anyone else having this problem or know of a fix? I've contacted ATT, who tried to fix but failed and closed the case. Incoming group text messages are getting converted to MMS and require that I attempt download under the individual's name first. Works sometimes. The message then appears in the group text. When it fails I get 5 attempts. Also occasionally having trouble sending group text messages. These are just texts.

Hi @Kgantt333

Thank you for reaching out to us. We'll be happy to look into this for you.

What kind of phone do you have? Are you using the default messaging app? When did you start having this issue? Is your device software up to date? Are you able to send texts without any issues? Have you attempted any troubleshooting, such as clearing the app cache or resetting your network settings? With more details, we'll have a better idea of how to proceed.

LG Phoenix 4 LM-X210APM.

Yes.

I believe so.

Yes, sometimes. The issue seems to be with group texts.

Cleared the cache. Haven't found network settings yet.

Thanks for following back up with us, @Kgantt333

AT&T released a software update for the LG Phoenix 4 (LM-X210APM) on August 31, 2020. Please ensure yours is is up to date. Out of date software can explain why your messaging is not functioning properly.

Make sure your device is charged to 20%, & connected to Wi-Fi then:

  1. Select Settings
  2. Go to General then About Phone
  3. Check out Update Center
  4. Select Software Update and Update Now

Once your software is up to date, observe how the messaging works. If it continues to perform the way you've reported we suggest Resetting Network Settings by:

  1. Select Settings
  2. Go to General tab and select Reset
  3. Choose Network settings reset, and RESET SETTINGS, then confirm

AT&T Device Support is a great place for additional messaging support. If after you update your software and reset your network settings, find your messaging is not functioning correctly use device support to get the help you're looking for.

Test it out, and let us know how it goes.

Tried Resetting. Seems worse now. Could not receive 8 in a row from one person on a 3 person group text. Usually, I can get most of them, and one or two fail. All 8 failed this time.

I also noticed when I get ready to type a text in a group thread, the letters "MMS" pop up right above the SEND button. Not there on other texts.

Greetings @Kgantt333,

Concerning your group messaging converting to MMS, you can check the message app settings to see what the message preferences are set there. Sometimes, the group messages come in formats that the device is set up to better handle as an MMS.

You can undo the setting if it is made to convert to MMS.

Let us know if this resolves the error.

I don't see any preferences in the message app. See attached.

Hi @Kgantt333,

There should be a 3-dot sign when you hit the messaging tab which shuold take you to the settings page.

Please check the device manual for further instructions.

We are standing by.

No 3-dot sign. The "device manual" link says "Hmm... We can't find what you're looking for." I've attached each screen from settings so you can see what I have.

I did find a user manual online. Found what I think we've been looking for at least for outgoing messages. Under group messaging, I turned off "send a single message as a multimedia message when there are multiple recipients." and restarted the phone. BUT I still see the "MMS" above the send button when sending a text. SIGH
