RCS not working for all people since getting S22

Since getting my new S22, RCS no longer works with my wife.  We are both on AT&T branded Samsung phones and using Google Messages.  We both have chat features enabled.  The only difference is that mine says it's "powered by AT&T" while hers says "powered by Jibe Mobile".  Does AT&T's RCS seriously not interact with Jibe Mobile RCS?  Furthermore, why wouldn't there be consistency within AT&T on this?  They are both AT&T phones purchased through AT&T and used on the AT&T network.

Hi @balkie and Community,

Thank you for reaching out to us with your questions and feedback.  RCS is a very exciting technology and we want to ensure it is working for everyone.

To answer a lot of the questions on this thread, let me provide some details about the RCS rollout and functionality.

  • AT&T and Google are working hand in hand to bring RCS interoperability among providers and clients as soon as possible.
  • AT&T is not restricting functionality or access, but interoperability is not completely rolled out at this time.
  • AT&T customers with an RCS capable device on the AT&T network can use RCS messaging between other AT&T customers with an RCS capable device on the AT&T network, as well as T-mobile customers at this time.

Regarding @balkie's question specifically, here are the details.

  • If a customer has previously downloaded the Google Messages application and enabled RCS, it has utilized the Google RCS / Jibe network.

  • If a customer uses the featured Google Messages application on the Samsung GS22 series, it is utilizing the AT&T RCS network.

We apologize there is confusion about RCS, and hopefully this helps resolve some of the more common questions.  We appreciate your patience and are excited to bring more RCS interoperability in the very near future.

Thanks

Tim, AT&T Community Strategy

It's been laughable for months.  Now it's just embarrassing.  Not a word from anyone here or through company updates.

I'm having the same issues with my S22. Mine says Connected and powered by AT&T, but unable to use Chat features with my contacts who I was previously using them with seamlessly. Very frustrating. Hopefully someone from AT&T will reply...

Also noticing that sending to the people RCS does work with is really bad.  Either takes 2-3 minutes for a message to send or doesn't send at all.  This is bad.

yep not working here. I tried unregistering on How to turn chat features off (google.com) and that still did not help. really not cool that we can't even delete this version of messenger to fix this

Does anyone know if ATT is limiting RCS to ATT customers only? I.e. if/when this issue is fixed can we use RCS messaging with non-att contacts?

They're not even limiting to just AT&T customers.  My wife is an AT&T customer with an AT&T branded Samsung A52 and it doesn't even work with her.  I also have a friend with a Pixel 6 on AT&T, doesn't work with her.  It's limited to an arbitrary segment of AT&T customers apparently.

I had RCS working with Jibe on Galaxy S10+ I brought from Verizon to At&T. I was using the Messages app from the play store, which looks different than the Google Messages app on the S22. I was able to use RCS on the S10 with lots of people on all the big carriers including AT&T, T-Mobile, etc.

My S22 shows it's Chat features are connected and ready for use but I cannot chat with anyone at all now. Only sms and MMS messages work.

I tried to disable chat, and even go to the Google page and disable chat features for my number. Still not able to actually make use of chat features, even though once renabled they show connected. Would like some resolution with this, or indication a fix is in the works.

I am also having this problem. ATT s22 ultra with chat features enabled and I can't chat with people who have chat features enabled, just defaults to SMS/MMS. I had to download the google messages app beta in order to get the chat features to be  "connected". Without the beta, my phone would just be stuck on "setting up." My friend with a pixel 6 pro on Verizon has no problem being able to use chat with other people but has a problem with chat when it comes to me.

Same here. Multiple calls to AT&T and Samsung. No help from AT&T except being hung up on multiple times by reps who are inept at their jobs.
