Nexus 6 OTA Updates (5.01 & 5.1)

I did my research and my homework and have it on pretty good authority (through experience) that AT&T is presently blocking updates to the Nexus 6 devices, regardless of how you purchased the device.  This is CLEAR violation of the Nexus program provided by Google where Nexus devices that are unlocked are to be able to download and apply updates when requested.  Now, we all know that Google rolls out those updates at a slower pace sometimes than we like, but to see our service provider blocking unlocked and fully personally owned devices from receiving OTA updates from Google is a travesty.  I even called your tech support department who told me point blank that you were not blocking any updates on your system.  AT&T, you need to fix this.  If you won't because you can't determine which devices are locked and unlocked on your network, then you just need to remove the block and let them update as needed.  There are plenty of developers who purchase these devices to build applications on them and you blocking a data download is like my ISP blocking me from updating Windows 8.  In fact, its a clear violation of several laws governing my unfettered access to data on the internet so long as it is lawful and does no harm to your network.  That being said, PROVE that 5.1 on the Nexus 6 is harmful to your network before you block it.  We all know it isn't so relax your controls and let it happen.  If you say it is....post the information.  We would all love to read how out of all the Nexus devices the 6 is one that could cripple AT&T's operations.  It would prove to be an interesting read right next to any lawsuits you are planning against the FCC Open Internet Rules which we all know is typical Company baloney.

Since I know my tirade will go completely unanswered and literally ignored by AT&T, here is how you can fix it on your own without mother hen getting in the way.

1)  Remove your SIM card from your phone.

2)  Perform a factory reset.

3)  During the setup process it will ask you to insert your SIM card....DON'T.  (Yep AT&T...that's how I figured out what you were doing.)

4)  Follow the rest of the steps like normal and attach on to your Wi-Fi.  You'll be immediately promopted to download the latest OTA which for me was 5.0.1.  Download and install.  After the next reboot you should see the next OTA (if you were like me).  Download and install.

5)  Re-insert AT&T's SIM card and enjoy your phone again like you should.

Hopefully you stop acting like each device on your system is your's when it clearly isn't.  Oh and your woefully slow update process for those who actually own AT&T branded devices (which I don't), needs to start speeding up.  You can't maintain your network security when you have insecure devices out there.

Thanks and hope this helps someone.

Where is this *Unlimited* data of which you speak?  I thought they got rid of that a long time ago and only certain carries provide it still.

Congrats at joining us w/ 5.1.  You will find that your phone doesn't randomly reboot anymore.

Completely concur w/ that statement.

I verified the other day what I was seeing on my end using Wireshark.  While attached to my Wi-Fi I requested (w/ another Nexus 6 that I didn't update yet) the phone to check for updates (validated the outgoing request via the USB debug tool), but when using Wireshark to check for the request going out from the router...well, guess what, it never went to the router at all.

After yanking the SIM and doing the reset and all that, everything worked as it should and I saw bi-directional activity through USB debug and Wireshark.

Imagine that.

Clear violation of FCC Net Netruality 2010 regualtions.

Actually if you read the rules if ATT can show that cant seperate which nexus 6 is theres and which is not.  All they have to do is show that to the FCC.  You know att has there butt covered.  Now mind you I think its a load of horse hoowy they are blocking nexus updates on the n6 I have one.  Now the wifes nexus 5 updated over the air on ATT without a hitch.  I think Moto gave ATT a generic imei list.

Also att has this nice blurb

Bring Your Own Device: Device must be compatible with the AT&T network and capable of using an AT&T SIM card. If necessary, you should unlock your device so that it can use an AT&T SIM card prior to porting your existing service. AT&T does not guarantee the performance of non-branded AT&T devices.

Go to social media and explode this issue, I also bought a unlocked nexus 6 from moto and this is unacceptable. I posted some things to their Facebook page and all they said is at&t doesn't block updates. Lol

Just verified on my Nexus 6.

bought it from ATT about two months ago

shipped with 5.0, on first boot it went to 5.01.

never went to 5.1.

i removed the SIM and did the factory reset and now i'm rocking 5.1!!!

no excuse for ATT to hold users back from getting 5.1..........

@davetyre

why did you factory reset just sideload the update or unlock the bootloader and flash it with ADB commands.

i was having trouble lately with random reboots and i figured a reset
couldn't hurt.
i did the reset earlier today. i was hoping that the reset might fix the
reboot issue and maybe the 5.1 update might come in as well
as i was doing the restore i found out about the pulling the SIM trick so i
went ahead and did that
i have unlocked the bootloaders on other devices but i haven't done this
one yet.

I had an at&t Nexus 6 that had an unfortunate bicycling accident and the screen was trashed. Because I was so disgusted with them giving me a hard time over not paying for their *insurance which is just like a car insurance I bought a Google Play Edition Nexus 6 right from Google. When I started it up and backed up etc it only had 5.0. I saw your thread after arguing with a buddy that 5.1 wasn't out and realizing it was and I was about to tear your thread a new one because when it did the software update check at first, it didn't download the update. After it started to restore my phone it automatically downloaded and I told it to install 5.0.1. then 5.1.. I want to start [Edited to comply with Guidelines] This is complete and utter crap..

while I know it stinks they way they are doing it.  You cant talk about legal stuff on the forums its against the rules.  Also you have to use arbitration since its in the TOS.
