Mobile Hotspot
I am using my Galaxy S21 phone as a mobile hotspot (and paid for the 15GB plan) to provide internet service for my laptop in St. Augustine on my sailboat. I have checked the coverage map and see 5G service available in this area. However, my internet is terrible!
My question is - would the internet service be faster if I purchased a hot spot device rather than just use my phone? This appears to be much more expensive (like adding another phone line) and I don't know if the speed would be faster.
Thank you for your help.

If I'm understanding you purchase the 15 GB prepaid phone plan which means you are going to be deprioritized over postpaid service. Dedicated prepaid hotspot plans are also going to be deprioritized over postpaid service.
I would recommend going with the unlimited extra or Premium plan for the phone. The unlimited Premium plan has the highest priority rating of any of the consumer plans. The only thing higher would be firstnet during an emergency or business plans.
Since you're bringing your own device you are under no contract and you already have a phone number so it's a migration in a corporate store there would be no activation fee for an already active number. Just be aware that just like prepaid you have no proration if you cancel service.
If you feel still find service lacking, try a different service provider.

Thank you for taking the time to reply! So, we looked into the account again and I was wrong - we are not on a 15GB prepaid plan (my mistake) but in fact on a Premium plan that allows up to 50GB hotspot then throttles after that level. So now we are trying to figure out how to see how much we've used.
After playing around on my phone last night, I'm wondering if my phone set up is a problem? Next question - do I need to turn off the wifi (terrible Marina wifi) when I turn on my mobile hotspot? I'm wondering if bc I've left the wifi connection on that somehow it's still going through the Marina rather than the cell service?
Thank you!
