Deleted my voicemail number

Since it was so hard to remember, I decided to change the number that I had to call to access my voicemail. Ever since, I can't access it and only get, "We weren't able to connect the call..." I have tried changing the number many times and nothing has worked.

Hey there! We understand your concern, so let's get you the information you need.

Since this seems convoluted, we are providing a few steps below. Please follow the same, or if you already have, please let us know.

If you have recently activated, please use the steps below to set your voicemail up:

  1. From your wireless phone, press and hold 1 or the Voicemail key.
  2. Select your language preference.
  3. Create a 7 to 15-digit password.
  4. Select your preferred greeting.
  5. Listen to the brief voicemail tutorial.

If you hang up before the tutorial completes, it will play again the next time you check voicemail.

Follow the steps below to reset your voicemail password, if that is what you were referring to:

First, make sure you're in an AT&T wireless coverage area. If you’re not. you won't be able to create a new voicemail password.

  1. Go to your account overview and open My wireless.
  2. Scroll to My Devices & add-ons and choose the device you want to manage.
  3. Select Manage my device.
  4. Look in Device options & settings, choose Reset voicemail password, and follow the prompts.

Additionally, learn how to turn Call Forwarding on and off to resolve issues when:

  • All your calls are going to voicemail
  • None of your calls are going to voicemail

If none of the steps above seem relevant, or don't yield the desired results, please use our dedicated voicemail troubleshooting tool to run diagnostics in real time.

Hope this information helps, and do let us know if you have any other concerns or questions for us in the future.

Thank you for visiting AT&T Community Forums!

It's not really the voicemail password, but the actual voicemail number that I call to access my voicemails.

The voicemail number is set by the provider as you are calling the voicemail system, not something you choose yourself. As you call from your phone it authorizes you on you personal voicemail box. You only change that number if you change providers.

Phones by default have speed dial 1 (press and hold the 1 key) to call Voicemail.

So you need to put the Access Number back to what it was, leave it alone, and just use the speed dial option going forward.

I didn't know about the speed dial, and now I don't think I can get the number back. Is this something I will have to call customer service about or will I be able to fix it from my phone?

Go back in and put in the VoiceMail Access Number where you removed it from your phone. Then test the speed dial. If it still gives you an issue then you may need to call support, though don't do it from that phone as difficult to adjust settings while on a call.

Once fixed then that speed dial will be your friend. This is why phones for years have the VoiceMail icon on the number 1 key.
