AT&T Software Update Process FAQs

We're the Device Product Development Team! We've been receiving feedback from all of you over in this thread, and we wanted to stop in and give some clarity around what our internal software update process looks like.

1. What is a software update?  A software update keeps your mobile device functioning at optimal performance. Typically, software updates may include new operating systems (OS), new features, enhancements, security updates, or the addition of new AT&T services such as Video or Wi-Fi Calling, NumberSync, or more.

2. Who decides when and how a software update is released? When the Operating System Developers announce a new software version, there are, essentially three steps that must happen before the update will be available for your mobile device.

• Step 1: The Operating System Developer releases the new software to the Device Manufacturers.
• Step 2: The Device Manufacturers must customize and test the new software to ensure maximum performance on each device model.
• Step 3: The Device Manufacturers send the new software to AT&T who then performs rigorous testing to ensure the device works on the network and all software works correctly.

When all parties are satisfied that the new software is functioning as expected, the software update will be released for download and installation on your device.

3. How long does it take for a software update to reach my device after it’s been announced by the Operating System Developer? The time varies based on the nature of the update, testing and results from the device manufacturer and AT&T.

4. How can I find out what the latest software version is for my device?  Check att.com/softwareupdates to determine the latest software version and instructions for downloading.
