AT&T LTE situation with US ASUS ZenFone 2 ZE551ML
Not having a micro SIM, and only the nano SIM from my iPhone 6, I went to the AT&T store to get provisioned over to a micro SIM.
There the associate decided, without my knowledge, to change my data plan based on the ZenFones IMEI number.
Long story short, I no longer have an LTE based data plan. I was on AT&T chat for 2 hours as they tried to explain to me that:
- Data plans are based on your IMEI number.
- They can't change me back to the iPhone plan.
- Since the ZenFone is not an AT&T branded phone they can't guarantee LTE service anyway.
Then I mentioned that my iPhone SIM has been receiving LTE just fine in my OnePlus One for 2 months as I tried out Android. They didn't have an answer for that.
So they are taking my case to AT&T technical support to see if an LTE plan can be programmed for me. The employees try to tell me that the reason the phone is not getting LTE is because the phones IMEI number dictates the data plan, and so far, the data plan it dictates is only 3G.
If this is the case, then ASUS and AT&T need to work together, fast, to program in an LTE plan for ZenFone 2's. Otherwise my plan is to reprovision my iPhone then swapping sims.
Anyone else having luck with AT&T giving you an LTE plan to use on the ASUS ZenFone 2?

So... I have an HTC M7 4G LTE phone with a MicroSIM.
If I buy the ASUS Zenfone 2, not say anything to AT&T,
and just transfer the MicroSIM from the M7 to the AZ2
should I get 4G LTE ???
I am currently on the MSV15GBw/RO plan.
Pete...

They aren't clueless, they just want you to buy a phone and extend your contract so they get the commission. They are not helping you, because you are not making them any money.

My wife and I swap sims to our different phones all the time. Never a problem.

that might be true if ATT was doing contracts in store which they are not and they are not at any authorized retailer.

AT&T Next℠ is a contract. BTW stores still offer 2 year contracts with Direct Fulfillment, but you will have to wait for your phone to be shipped to the store. They are pushing the next option which still binds you to service and monthly payments. Are you telling me that AT&T sales reps are not making commission?

another story. also next is not a contract... Its a loan if you really
look at it. I paid off 2 next payment plans after 3 months. Then sold one
of the s6's and got a s6 920i unlocked.

Yeah I have an HTC and a Samsung on Next, with another Samsung and a Tablet on contract. It is one bill to AT&T. A bill is a bill no matter what they call it...

OK..let me muddy the waters...I have had my Asus ZenFone for about six months and have been very happy with it. But I never get more than "H+" for a signal in the Washington DC metro area.
However, I was in Chicago a couple of weeks ago and surprised to see the 4G symbol on my phone the entire 5 days I was going to and fro around town. Why does Chicago seem to have blanket 4G coverage and the nation's capital area does not (at least for the ZenFone).
For the record, I did nothing but get off the plane to get the 4G speed in Chicago...never talked to AT&T, never went near their stores/kiosks. Touched back down in DC and I'm back in the stone age.
Does anyone have a theory why this is happening? More importantly, can anyone suggest anything a user can do on their own (without interacting with AT&T drones) to ensure 4G?

let me ask you this what model number do you have? The global version does not have all ATT's LTE bands...
