AT&T Galaxy S5 on Cricket Wireless: How to Update Phone
Hi all,
I recently purchased a new, unlocked AT&T Galaxy S5. I am using it with Cricket Wireless SIM. The current version is 4.4.2. An attempt to check for OTA updates results in none being found, wait 24 hours to try again.
So...how do I get the update? Here are the options I've heard and am considering:
- Ask someone at Best Buy to help
- Insert an AT&T sim card and attempt the FOTA update
- Attempt to upgrade using Samsung Kies
Any suggestions as to what will work for me? Hate to sit on 4.4.2 on a new phone forever.

Hi there @Dysentery4You
I’d be happy to help with your device update! Any of the first two options you have posted should be successful in updating your device. I believe that this update is not available via Samsung Kies at this time. By inserting an AT&T SIM, you would be able to receive the update over-the-air (device IMEI must also be provisioned on the line), or at select Best Buy stores, the Samsung Experience Shop can flash the update directly to your device.
I hope this helps!

Take the phone to a best buy experience center. Or if you have a friend with an active att acount put the sim in. Now I will say back up your info as when they flash the phone it will wipe all your data.
@ATTMobilityCare KIES 3 is now a dead program. They have the new one they are using on the s6/edge. They have no plans to use kies 3 going forward or so my Samsung friends have said.

Charise: Several of the Best Buys that I've called seem less-than-confident that they will be able to do this. One said they "didn't have the hardware" (which I thought was a computer with the program downloaded, so that was interesting!) Are there certain ones that have this ability when others don't?

Dysentery4You--it worked when I went to the Best Buy today so I am very relieved about that. Since Cricket didn't seem to know anything about the ability to do that, I called the location where I got my SIM card and let them know. Still can't get the fingerprint scanner to work though and I was told that is sometimes a problem on the unlocked phones.

Can you please explain what you mean by "device IMEI must also be provisioned on the line"?
Does that mean that I have to call AT&T and tell them that I'm going to be using the phone that I'm trying to update on that line, instead of the phone that the SIM is currently installed in?
Thanks!
