Just touch and hold the widget and look for a trash can near the top if on gingerbread or bottom if you haven't updated yet then slide the widget to the trash can.  On gingerbread it will turn red and then you can release.  On froyo, you more have to eyeball it and it will take a few practice tries.

This will apply to any widget or shortcut that you have added.

It also takes practice but you can slide the widget to the screens in either direction and in gingerbread there are some left and right arrows that you just drag it to until the color matches.
