Alcatel 5002R - turn off audio assist

I must have done something to activate "audio assist" - or whatever it's called.  The phone speaks at every link I tap.  How can I turn this off?

Thanks, Rachel, for your detailed - but easy-ro-follow - directions. The problem was that the Alcatel 5002R is my friend's phone - one that I was not familiar with. I didn't know the phone's name for audio assist.

I do appreciate your quick and very helpful response!

My problem started with this audio assist, I think---a very weird voice.  I couldn't figure out how to shut it up so I shut the phone off.  I had to use double tap, but now I don't know how to get back in.  I got my unlock code in and tried to double tap OK , but it doesn't work.  What's happening?  HELP.  I have no other phone here.  I can't even get into ATT because I have no phone to received the code text.
