Same here - have talked to ATT multiple times with no answers. Here are my observations so far:
- we use ATT prepaid plan, with text package addon
- the strange numbers are always incoming
- always SEEM to correlate with a group text conversation
- sometime AFTER the strange numbers, a text is logged from a number I recognize and actually receive the text for (the strange number/letters I don't actually seem to receive any text)
- text from other members of the group conversation are logged normally as far as I can tell
- NEW information I saw just today: in the log (not the pfd version) at the bottom, after Call Location, all the texts with strange number/letter combinations indicate
Service Type: Text over IP. I never saw this before, because it is NOT in the pdf log you can download - you have to actually open the detail of each indivual text in your history to see it.
I think I may be getting closer to some understanding (although why ATT cannot figure this out I don't know???) - if the sender is using some kind of "text over ip" - that may mean that the text is being sent as it is being typed, instead of waiting for the entire text.
So maybe that accounts for 2,3,4,5 or 6 "texts" for each one text actually received? I don't know what to do about it, because we don't have unlimited texts, and this eats them up very fast.
Current theories: maybe the sender is using an iPhone? maybe the sender is using a new service (text over ip)? maybe the sender is using a different kind of app?
Would appreciate if anyone else has information to share.
do you have an Iphone, messaging someone with an iphone? I believe it appears when iPhone user texts iPhone user (iMessage).
Text over IP (or ToIP) is a way of providing a real-time text (RTT) service that operates over IP-based networks. It complements Voice over IP (VoIP) and Video over IP. ... Real-time text is designed for conversational use where people interactively converse with each other.
So SMS works over the cell network. IP works over Wifi/Data.

I believe I have the answer to this puzzling mystery of the 1BF882564782 number code. Each time my husband sends out an MMS on his AT&T phone, I can see each person in the conversation as they reply back. When I go onto his AT&T online Account History page, it shows the MMS that he sent out as each individual person's phone number and the time, but where they have responded back is this odd number -- 1BF882564782 instead of their actual phone number. I have the counted the same amount of corresponding 1BF882564782 numbers to match the replies recieved to the MMS message on his phone. However, none of their individual numbers show up on the account page after the initial MMS is sent out until my husband responds again and then all of the recipeints phone numbers appear again, and if they respond, once again we see this number show up in place of their actual number - 1BF882564782 on the account page. On the phone screen it's their name that appears and the time. So I have to surmise that this is a "reply" code number for each recipient in an MMS "group" message.
