Pre-Paid balance

I've had AT&T Pre-Paid phone for MANY years. Clearly, with a balance on my pre-paid account of over $360, my phone is just for quick calls home or emergencies. Verizon made changes to their pre-pay and my mother-in-law gets to have $5/mo deducted from her large balance. AT&T says NO they won't do that. My only option with AT&T is to keep adding to that already high balance that will be higher by this time next year AND the only way to keep my balance is to PHONE IN every 30 days and charge $5. The lowest Autopay and on-line payment amount is $25 for 30 days. Ridiculous! I wish I could get a refund of my balance as I am certainly looking to go elsewhere if this is how it will be. I see no way to contact someone who can help at AT&T. I don't want to take it out on the poor Customer Service people who are just doing what they have to. Anyone know where I can register my complaint?

Anyone know where I can register my complaint?

You can file a complaint with the FCC or BBB but why bother, that’s just the way prepaid works. They aren’t going to change anything because of your complaint. Now I have heard of them extending the expiration date for customers with large balances by calling and asking rather than having to add $5 every 30 days. Maybe try that?

They used to extend the expiration date or sometimes let me put $20 onto the account to extend it for a year which was very generous and made me like AT&T. If they had not done that- my balance might be $2000! Now, the cheapest way with the new policy is to phone in for $5 each month. Can't do an on-line $5 or an Auto-Pay $5....only phone. A day late and you loose it all.

Prepaid doesn’t refund.

Didn't think they would refund, but a call each month is $60/year and I bet my balance will be $50 or more higher this time net year. That is my cheapest option. I wouldn't be so mad if I could set up $5/mo on Auto-Pay or even go on-line monthly and pay $5- but a phone call each month is just nuts!

You should be able to refill online for as low as $10. Hopefully you also realize a $25 refill is good for 90 days, not 30 days. If you did autopay with $25, it would be every 90 days, not every 30 days. Also, any refill less than $10 should only be good for 15 days. They are already doing you a favor by giving you 30 days on a $5 refill.

Hi samjog1965, we want to help with your Prepaid balance inquiry!

We recommend verifying your AT&T Prepaid payment to make sure we got your payment and that it was credited to your account. The maximum account balance at any time is $900.

  • Payments are good for a specific time based on the amount paid, after which the balance expires and remaining funds are removed from the account. Balance expirations do not stack.
    • To keep funds from expiring, payments must be made before the expiration date.
    • The maximum expiration period is 365 days from the payment date.

Refill/Payment Amount

Balance Expiration Period

$5.00 - $24.99 30 Days
$25.00 - $99.99 90 Days
$100.00+ 365 Days

If this doesn't help, let us know and we'll pull you into private to take a closer look at your payments & balance.

We are here if you have additional questions! Thank you for posting on the AT&T Community Forums!
