You can only use your balance to pay for service. You can either buy add-ons or it will get used when your plan renews.

When you pay into your prepaid account with refills, you are paying to keep the account open whether or not you use the balance for service or not. AT&T, or any other prepaid carrier does not refund your prepaid balance. You can use it up by switching to a monthly plan, and using your phone. Keep an eye on the expiration date. You must make minimum refills to keep your balance. If your plan expires the money goes away, and then you have nothing to pay for service, and it's wasted.
