number already in use

Someone just called me and said they had the same number.

that they've had it for about a year.

I just got this one about a month ago.

What do I need to do.

Ignore them. It should not be possible for someone else to have the same number.

Phone numbers might be reused, but only one person may have that exact phone number at any given time. So both of yo having the exact same number is not possible.

Either someone is misreading a number, or someone is trying to scam you (maliciously or maybe as a bad joke). Caller ID info can be spoofed.

Though there have been a few posts this year where someone accidently changed the phone number for the wrong line on their account (such as changing their mother's by accident). If that is the case where it was changed recently and you got it at that time, unfortunately there is not a way to release a number to a specific person without transferring the entire line itself.
