Not receiving SMS or MMS from Verizon (and providers that use Verizon networks)

For those that have been able to resolve the issue in not being able to receive SMS/MMS/texts from non-iPhone users on Verizon’s network (but they are able to receive texts from you), how did you resolve this issue?

AT&T customer service is garbage. I guarantee you an AT&T rep will comment below and tell me to go to a link, turn off my phone, or reset my

network settings. Go fly a kite.

I’ve called AT&T multiple times and all they do is read a script and say a ticket will be opened with technical team to investigate.
I received an email update today on said investigation, which stated technical staff was “unable to find a problem.”

I’ve noticed a few folks on these boards who suddenly saw text messages from Verizon numbers appear. How did you make this happen?

I even read that one individual filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau with Verizon, and shortly thereafter had this issue resolved.

So do folks think it is a porting issue with AT&T? Is something set up wrong on AT&T’s end with our plans? Or is it something on Verizon’s end? Thanks in advance for your comments!

Also, has anyone received a new SIM card from an AT&T store and find the issue resolve after the swap? Considering trying that next…

No. My number was with Google Voice for at least five years before porting it to AT&T prepaid last week. 

The contacts who are with Verizon/US Mobile/Spectrum (and using Androids) were able to send me texts when the number was with Google Voice. But now that my number is with AT&T, their texts to me don’t go through….although they continue to receive my texts. 

(No issues with contacts/friends using iPhones on Verizon as all ‘texts’ are sent/received via iMessage)

Anytime I see complaints like this, it involves a ported number. The problem is likely with the sender meaning however they route outgoing text messages is still pointing to google voice. I bet those texts are being delivered to your old carrier and therefore dropped since your number no longer exists there. You would need the Verizon side to verify if that’s what is happening. As for a resolution, that suggests the port of your number was incomplete and not every database or routing table got updated. You can try contacting ATT’s port activation center, perhaps they can resolve it.

We understand how important it is to send and receive text messages. As our Ace @sandblaster stated, reach out to the AT&T Port Activation Center at 866-898-7685.

 

Here is also Two fast solutions:

  • Restart your device. In some instances it may just be cached information, and restarting the device can resolve it.
  • Clear storage from the messenger app. Go to Setting >Tap on Apps > Select Messages app > Tap Storage > Select Clear Cache.

@sandblaster Well, I tried calling the port activation center. They are adamant that the port went through correctly, and refused to work on the issue further--stating this is a technical concern. I was transferred to tech support (again) this morning...the guy pretended to look into it, but ended up just providing me with a general number for Verizon to look into the issue myself. The tech support specialist told me they are not allowed to contact Verizon. So, @sandblaster , any further ideas on how to resolve? Appreciate your time and assistance. AT&T doesn't seem to want to do anything.

The thing is, there isn’t anything ATT can do if Verizon is not delivering the texts to ATT other than contact Verizon. My suggestion would be to get one of those Verizon senders to contact Verizon. If Verizon could at least verify if texts to your number are being sent to ATT or still being sent to Google Voice, that would at least narrow down the problem.

@sandblaster I will try to have a family member with Verizon try this. Thank you. New development. I can receive MMS (and group texts, also MMS, right?) from Verizon numbers. Just not plain SMS. Does that help narrow down the issue at all from your perspective? (reminder, I CAN send SMS to verizon numbers...)

Yes, group texts are sent as MMS. Unfortunately, I don’t know enough about the difference between SMS and MMS transport to say that narrows anything down.

Can you go to https://www.verizon.com/switch-to-verizon/ and type in your number and then press the button that says check elegibiltiy and tell me what it says?

Still no resolution here. I stopped into two AT&T stores this afternoon. One swapped my SIM card...that did not fix anything. Another store fully understood my issue, didn't know how to fix it, called "technical support" and became frustrated with the call center after the rep on the phone blamed Apple. Eventually, the customer service rep in the store hung up on the call center, told me I didn't have any other options to resolve, apologized, and conceded I should switch providers.

I switched to Spectrum, thinking it would solve the issue. The switch actually solved the Verizon SMS issue, but I was then unable to receive SMS from AT&T and T-Mobile numbers. I eventually asked for a new number from Spectrum (after 15 years with the previous number…ug). No issues with new number from Spectrum. 

I’m convinced AT&T screwed up my original port, creating issues for the number regardless of the carrier.
